I’m now living in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and just learned that one of my neighbors lived in Saigon in 1968. Small world!! Here’s a photo of me in my abaya, taken about two weeks ago. I arrived in the Kingdom on August 17 and am teaching special ed at the Dhahran British Grammar School.

I hope you enjoy your time in Dhahran, but I have to say your wardrobe leaves much to be desired…lol. Give us all an update now and again on how you are doing, what you are doing, and how life is in S.A. Take care of yourself and all the best – Ken
Aloha Cathie,
How wonderful for you to be teaching in Dhahran. I love love overseas adventures!
I do have to agree with Ken on the outfit however…And Frankie was making fun of me in my Saigon duds.
Keep us informed of your stay.
Sarah
And, what’s wrong with an Abaya? – LOL. Just looks like the Arab version of a Hawaiian Muu Muu – LOL 🙂
Cathie – don’t listen to Ken and Sarah, they have no taste for fashion – LOL 🙂
I think you look great dressed in the ‘local’ attire of Dhahran. The head scarf is a nice touch too. Of course, adding a veil would add a touch of mystique.
I would imagine the women there find the Abaya as comfortable as the women in Hawaii find the Muu Muu.
Visit often, and as Ken said – keep us up to date on whats going on there.

Cathie…not sure if you remember me or not, but it’s nice to see you check in on this site! Stay in touch with us all…and be sure to share any stories (embarassing or otherwise… ;)from the Saigon days! Best wishes…Randy
Hi Kathy,
Thanx for checking in and sharing. Hope you’ll give us periodic reports.
Your note and picture brought back memories. I was on assignment 1982-1983 in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is a fascinating country. I enjoyed my two years there, in spite of all the restrictions and lack of any form of entertainment except dining out.
Regards,
Burt
Gosh, Cathie and I remember you in a bikini at the Cerce…uuuh laaa la! and yes, I owe you a bottle of wine….and Sarah baby..noway would I make fun of you! Hay guys, have you seen Sarah’s legs? another uuun laaaa la!!! Frankie
I resided in Saigon from 1966 until 1971. My father was a pilot for Air America. There were few American kids left when I got there. What you all knew as your shool was already the third field hospital. The first school I attended was the phoenix study group and had a total of eight kids of varying age and class levels. It was a small one room shack wih a corrigated tin roof that when monsoon began the rain was so loud hitting the roof we couldn’t hear anything the teacher was saying. They later occupied a bigger building but few of the kids were in my generation. So most of my friends were GI’s. The first home we lived in was in Cholon on Nguyen Tri Phuong street just a few blocks away from the PX and commissary. I actually worked at the commisary as a bag boy. Man those GI’s really tipped me well just because they were amazed an American kid was living there. We eventually moved to a home closer to Tan Son Nhut on Cach Mang street. I am curious who your neighbor is who lived in Saigon in 1968? I might have known him. I was fourteen then and the Tet offensive was a real fun experience.
