Kathy Says Do You Remember …

by Kathy (Connor) Dobronyi

Anyone remember the programming on the Armed Forces Radio, Saigon 1963-64?

Was Rock and Roll music scheduled for 2 hours from 4-6 in the late afternoon?

Were other music genres like Country and Western, Easy Listening, etc. scheduled for 2-hour blocks during the day?

In the evening, we listened to radio dramas and comedies because there was no television. I really enjoyed those programs. I think “The Shadow” was on Thursday night. We also listed to “Fibber McGee’s Closet,” and other comedy programs.

Anyone have other memories about our radio entertainment?

The Shadow (5 shows)

Fibber McGee and Molly (65 shows)

Yes, I remember, we use to go ino the studio and a group of three maybe four teenagers…can’t remember exactly how many people would critique the new songs from the States and say if we liked them or not. We were pretty “cool” back then!!!! candice busa

We used to listen to Armed Forces Radio in the morning and afternoon for the stories. They had some drama as I remember it. Sometimes the reception wasn’t very good. Do you remember that we didn’t have any milk and we had to drink Carnation powdered milk? It had a grey tinge to it.

The milk not only had a gray tinge, it also tasted horrible with the Jerry-can water. No amount of chocolate syrup or strawberry Quik could cure the horrid taste! When we got home, I consumed as much water and milk as I could possibly hold.

Hi Ron! Nice to see your comments. We were neighbors on Yen Do.

My memory was of listening to the Presidential election on American Overseas Radio that Kennedy won. When we got back to the states in 1962 I remember going to the officers club and all of us kids (4) going up to the bar, pulling up a stool and ordering milk – we drank about a gallon each. That Carnation stuff was the worst! Walking through a grocery store back home after years in Saigon was bazaar – all that food cold and rows and rows of it, everything clean and spotless (no smell of nuc mam), fully lit with aisles stacked high. Early form of tripping you could say.

In the summer they would also broadcast baseball games. I remember listening to Vin Scully, so it must have been the LA Dodgers. 🙂

  • Les Arbuckle

My father, Chief Petty Officer Bryant Arbuckle, set up the AFRS studio on top of the Rex hotel in June of 1962 and began broadcasting The Dawnbuster Show, immediately. When my family finally came over in Jan. of 1963, I was relieved to hear that AFRS broadcast good old American Top 40 Rock and Roll from 4 to 6 every day. They also played C+W, Easy Listening Hits, and a great variety of other entertainment so as to have something for everyone.

As for milk, we never drank the powdered stuff. Instead, our maid procured for us a French canned milk that had a sweet taste and was very thick, almost like cream. It was better than nothing, but not by much!

I lived overseas from 3 to 18, and never had television. I’ve carried that over to my life in the States, and still don’t have TV. My husband and I read a lot, and also listen to radio shows. The public radio station in Eugene, OR (in the early 80s) used to have the most awesome old radio show programming ever! They also carried a number of modern radio shows, including a few sci fi “cowboys and aliens” type of shows. Fabulous! My advice to anyone: kill your TV! 🙂

    • Kim – I *totally agree* – KILL TV’s!!! 🙂

I’ve got access to 100’s of recordings of old radio show programs. One of the features I’ll be adding to the site (once I’ve completed the upgrades) is a Radio Player that will include many old radio show programs – should be fun – LOL
