Seeking the “Unfound”

Lots of our former school mates are still missing from Roy McDonald’s directory and from the blog here and we need to make a concerted effort to try and find some of these folks. Perhaps I am preaching to the converted since I am one of the last to link up with the Saigon Kids. But I am sure that many of us, if we think about it, or look in that top drawer of the old desk in the basement, can come up with information regarding some of the “missing.”

Alice recently provided a good clue and while it didn’t pan out the way we wanted it to, it still resulted in another SK found. So I ask you, please think about this and if you know just a tid-bit of information about someone who is currently “unfound,” let me know and I will try to run it down and see what develops.

Yes, some probably don’t want to be found or bothered by us old farts and they may have something better to do with their time and that’s fine, at least we will have tried to bring them “into the fold.”

Can you help? My home email is listed in Roy’s directory and would rather not publish it here.

Regards to all – Ken

Way to go, Ken! Keep up the great work! You are doing a great service for all Saigon Kids! While some may not openingly express it, ALL Saigon Kids DO appreciate your efforts and devotion to reuniting us and keeping us all together.

On behalf of all Saigon Kids, thank you, Ken for all of your time, effort and expense you’ve gone too, to locate, as yet, unfound Saigon Kids. We appreciate all you have done and continue to do!

Thanks, Ken…”for he’s a jolly good fellow…for he’s a jolly good fellow…” (sung to the tune of ‘The Bear Went Over The Mountain’) 🙂 (I know…I’m an abnoxious ass!)
    Seriously…thanks! Randy

    Well, Ken,

I only know of two that I’ve sorta kept up with from my days at ACS, both of which you probably already know about: Mike Dunn and Rich Shutt.

Sorry not to have more info…

    Regards,

    Burt

  • Ken

@ Burt – I don’t recall Rich Shutt, but get him on board…and then look into his head and see who he can hints on. Ken

Let me add a bit more to this idea….if you know of brothers or sisters or parents first names or where folks came from, any tid-bit of information would be advantageous to me in my searching. Ken

PHONE CALL VOLUNEERS NEEDED … As most of you know, Ken is located in Germany. In his search for Saigon Kids there eventually comes a point, in many cases, where it becomes necessary to attempt to make contact by phone, as the only remaining means available. Calling to the USA from Germany is very expensive. So, if there are any of you living in the USA who are willing to make phone calls for Ken, please let him know. Most any of us who have Cell phones can call anyplace in the USA (and sometimes Canada) free. Particularly, if you have Unlimited Minute calling plans. Ken’s email address is located in the Directory on our Saigon Kids Web Site. The site link is on the Menu (right side of this page).

Thank you in advance for your help.

Actually the cost isn’t the problem, its the time difference between, say Germany and the west coast of the US….calls from here are actually quite inexpensive (1.4 euro cents per minute this week). Ken

    Okay, Ken … that too … lol … 🙂

Ken, I can call anywhere in the States, anytime. Just let me know whom to call.

About Rick Shutt. I haven’t had correspondence with him in a while. My computator crapped out a while ago and I have lost his email. I’ll try to recover it from my old laptop that my wife is now using…

You can see Rick and Mike and I and my bro Rob on my sampan on our SK photo site.

Hey Seeking One…..Suzie had a sister in 5th grade – same class with Mary-Anne Purvis Sullivan – who appeared recently. Maybe Mary-Anne has a lead – Maile didn’t.

Saw Rick in San Diego last week. He took us to a bunch of his old places of interest during his college days. Great burgers, pizza…he even took us on M.C.R.D….I would not have gone otherwise! Have not been there since 1966. Weird…guess the name of the Gate Guard?!! You guessed it…STODDARD!! That is weird, isn’t it! Even the Gate Guard thought it strange. Hasn’t change much…except the old huts I lived in are gone and it is part of the obstacle course!
    Rick is doing great.
Arlene and her husband David came by Saturday for a few hours.Short but great time!!!

  • I was short lived at the ACS, JAN ’64 to school letting out for the summer. But it was an experience I’ll never forget. My Dad worked for USOM in Long Xugen provence. We lived on the JDP Compound next to Tan San Nhuet Airbase. Would love to hook up with anyone who lived there in 1964.

  • Ken

@ Jay – My family lived at JDP in 1964. My kid sister Debbie was about eight at the time so perhaps younger than you and out of your age group. I lived there too for a bit in late 1963 and had a red motorcycle. Tickle any memories.

Join up with the Saigon Kids and welcome. Ken

Anyone know of the whereabouts of Ingrid Blaufarb, who was in ACS in 1958, and lived just down Rue Richaud/Phan dinh Phung from me. The Colby’s lived there after the Blaufarbs left.
How about John Treat, also 1958-59 time frame, or Janet Bogardus, Chan Durbrow or Jimmy Turnbull? Some were still there when we made an emergency trip stateside and never returned. Always wondered what happened to these friends…no internet back then.

Well, I’ve been in contact with Frank Durham (class of 62) and passed on info on this site and Roy’s but I don’t see that he has come forward yet. Hopefully soon. He did tell me he lost contact with his old flame Karen Walthers after I asked him about her. I will try her alumni asso. and see if I can find something on her. Always nice to bring another one into the fold. More later. Ken

Ken – My memory is a bit fuzzy, but there was a Frank Walthers who was a very, very close friend of my dad’s. I think Karen was his daughter (this is my fuzzy memory part – lol). Frank Walthers and his wife retired from the State Dept. spending the rest of their lives living on the Gold Coast of Oahu, Hawaii. They lived in the 2900 to 3100 block (approximately) of KalaKaua Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii. I believe they’ve passed away now. If not, they would be in their mid to late 80’s. The last time I had contact with them was in the mid-1980s.

Obviously, Bob, I have no idea if you got the right connection but it probably is on target. I’ve emails the alumni asso. at Sou. Ill. Univ. Carbondale and asked them to contact her if they have any current information on her. Let’s see what happens. We do grow, albeit slowly. Ken

I was just looking at the Saigon Kids site and was so shocked to see how many of us have already passed away. While I realize that we are all getting older, we get sick or we have accidents, still, to me, it is a shock when you read the name of a friend or schoolmate who has died, always far too early.

While it may seem somewhat eerie, I would like to suggest an obituary column where a friend or family member could post notice of a passing some information on the life of that person.

I just learned recently, if the information is correct, that Terry Coleman passed away as a result of his work at the World Trade Center rescue site. This man goes down in my book as a hero.

Anyway, it is just my two cents (whose value is depreciating rapidly here in Europe).

    Regards to all – Ken

Ken – I have it on my ‘list’ of things to add to the site when I do a complete revamping of the Blog, to include a separate “Memorial” page/section for honoring those Saigon Kids who have gone before us across the barrier we call death.

Yes, your information pertaining to Terry Coleman is correct.

    Bob,

I seemed to have messed up trying to log into the gallery – my password did not work and after a few trails it locked me out. Help!

    • Admin

George – Yes, I have it programmed to ‘lock out’ after ‘X number’ of attempts with wrong password. This prevents ‘robots’ and ‘hackers’ from gaining access, etc. I’ll reset your password and email it to you.

Interesting info coming out after beaucoup passage of time. I remember a lot from our 1958 to 1961 tour; my dad worked for JDP. I often wondered what happened to the ones I hung around with: Dave Turnbull, Joes and arlyn Miller, Walt Rogers, the Haznam sisters, interesting story after hanging around with Mitch Battleman, etc. Perhaps I’ll write up a short story of that encounter.
    Keep up the good work.
    Cheers,
    Mike.
